The Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) and Union Parishad Governance Project (UPGP) under Local Government Division (LGD) jointly organised those workshops recently.

According to a UZGP statement, they have made the key local government functionaries aware of new 17 global goals and 169 targets and the roles and responsibilities of local government institutions in implementing those goals.

This is for the first time they have organised such workshops to link SDGs with Upazila Parishad activities. The seven selected districts were Kishoreganj, Brahmanbarhia, Sirajganj, Khulna, Rangpur, Sunamganj and Barguna.

This is also part of the UZGP’s plan to hold seven district-level and 65 Upazila-level orientations, and 65 Upazila-level ‘SDG-localisation workshops’ by December this year.

The UZGP, being implemented by LGD and supported by the European Union (EU), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), UNCDF and the UNDP, is working to strengthen the Upazila Parishad as a “more effective, democratic, transparent, service-oriented and accountable local government institution”.
